If we didn't have a steady stream of well educated computer and network support personnel, commerce in Great Britain (as elsewhere) would inevitably run into problems. Therefore, there's an on-going demand for people to support both users and the systems they work with. Because we become more and more dependent on our PC's, we additionally inevitably become more reliant on the well trained IT networkers, who maintain those systems.

We'd hazard a guess that you're a practical sort of person - the 'hands-on' personality type. If you're anything like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides would be considered as a last resort, but it's not really your thing. Study programs now come in the form of CD and DVD ROM's, where your computer becomes the centre of your learning. Video streaming means you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how to do something, with some practice time to follow - in an interactive lab. Don't take any chances and look at some of the typical study materials provided before you sign on the dotted line. Always insist on instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and interactive audio-visual sections with practice modules.

Opt for CD or DVD ROM based materials where possible. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

An effective training program should also include accredited simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Steer clear of depending on unauthorised exam papers and questions. The type of questions asked can be quite different - and sometimes this can be a real headache when the proper exam time arrives. 'Mock' or practice exams will prove very useful as a tool for logging knowledge into your brain - then when the time comes for you to take the proper exam, you won't be worried.

Make sure that all your accreditations are current and what employers are looking for - don't even consider programs which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you'd printed it yourself). The main industry leaders such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA all have globally approved skills courses. These big-hitters can make sure you stand out at interview.
